Seksualiti Merdeka is a Malaysian group of activists that fight for equal rights and dignity for all regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. It is often caricatured as an "LGBT" rights group and this has a negative perception in Malaysia. Indeed, despite the apparent modernity of Malaysian society, their core mission challenges many traditional and religious beliefs. Moreover, some authorities seemingly condone or justify homophobic and transphobic violence, abuse and harassment. This is the case for transsexuals who reported regular physical harassment, including by authorities.
